Sony Ericsson W880i vs iPod Video

Sony Ericsson W880i vs. iPod

Do you think that Sony Ericsson W880i can challenge iPod when it comes to music? iPod is the most best selling portable music device in the world and there are many companies that wants to beat Apple's iPod, such as Microsoft and Creative, but those companies are not any more the only threats. Mobile phone manufacturers are getting more and more to portable music business. Almost every new phone has music player and some of them also has a video player.
Sony Ericsson has quite strong position in this business, thanks to their Walkman based phone. Sony Ericsson has now over ten W-series phone and there are more to come. The newest and greatest model is Sony Ericsson W880i, which is thin and elegant music phone.

Size and design

It's hard to say which one looks better or has better design. They both look great. iPod's simple, glossy design is great and many people seems to like it. W880i is a little bit complicated. It has cool cover, which is made of stainless steel and gives some dignity to the phone.

How about the size and weight? Which on is smaller? Let's find out! Sony Ericsson W880i is very thin and it's only 9,4 mm. thick. iPod video (30 GB) is 1,1 cm thick, so I guess W880i is the winner. Sony Ericsson W880i is 10,3 cm long and 4,65 cm wide. How about iPod? It's 10,35 cm long and 6,18 cm wide. Looks like this round goes to Sony Ericsson too.

Of course design is a matter of taste and I won't talk more about the design.

Screen

Then, let see which one has better screen. Sony Ericsson W880i has 1,8 inch TFT screen, 240*320 pixels and 256K colors. iPod has bigger screen. It has 2,5 inch display, 320*240 resolution and over 65 000 colors. Hard to say which one wins... You can decide that.

Storage

Hmm... I have some kind of feeling that iPod will win this round easily, but let see. W880i has only 16MB internal memory, so it can hold only few songs without memory card. Luckily it has 1GB memory card (M2) included, so it can hold about 200 MP3 (5MB each). I didn't find information about how big memory card you can use with W880i, but I guess 2GB card will at least work, so then it can hold about 400 songs.

iPod video has 30BG hard drive, so it can easily hold 6000 song (5MB each).

Like I said iPod wins this round easily. W880i can't compete when it comes to storage.

Other things

There are some other things we need to take a look at, such as, which one has better headsets? This is easy. I think Sony Ericsson W880i has a lot of better headsets that iPod. All Walkman phones has good headsets…

How about the batter life? The W880i delivers up to 18 hours music listening time, which is 4 hours more than iPod (30 GB) can offer. Of course we can’t be totally sure how true these numbers are.

Conclusion

We have two great devices and it’s very hard to say which one is the better. Some one likes to carry two devices, mobile phone and portable music device. In the other hand it would be nice to have one device that has phone and music features.

In my opinion it’s nice to have all in on device, but there are some problems. Sometimes I use my M600i’s music player and then I notice that my battery is almost empty and I need to make important call. That’s a situation when I hope that I would have two different devices. I really think that battery life should be much better.

I hope this article helps you to make the right choice!
