What will be the big thing in 2008?

Sony Ericsson 2008

Christmas is getting closer and soon it is time to celebrate the new year but before we do that, let's think what Sony Ericsson could be bringing in 2008. What could be the main thing they are consternating on? If we consider this year, I have noticed that Sony Ericsson has been expanding their portfolio a lot. Especially we have seen a lot of mid-end phones. Actually many phones are just redesigns from the old ones. For instance K810i and K770i are basically the same old K800i with a new design. Second thing I have also notices is that Sony Ericsson is releasing their phones in different colors. Just recently W200i got four new colors, W580i came out in pink and so on. These things are definitely referring the fact that Sony Ericsson is trying to appeal to different kind of customers to gain more market share and it seems to be working.

More megapixels or optical zoom?

Bengt Stavenow recently shared his thought about the future of mobile phone. "Here is a megapixel race going on, and it will continue, but there is also a need for increased camera quality. Optical zoom plays a key part here." I think this clearly tells us that Sony Ericsson will bring phone with optical zoom, but will it happened in 2008? I think it will! Probably not soon but I'm quite confident that we will have phone(s) with optical zoom before the end of 2008. Maybe the phone will be K850i successor.

Sony Ericsson K850i

I'm not sure if we will see more megapixels in Sony Ericsson phones next year. I think 5 megapixel is enough at the moment and it might be better to concentrate on the camera quality, just like Bengt Stavenow said optical zoom plays a key part here. I think there's two options, either we will see 5 megapixel phone with optical zoom or 7 megapixel phone with optical zoom. For me it really doesn't matter if the camera has 5 or 7 megapixels. I'm also quite sure we will at least see more 5 megapixel phones. Just what Sony Ericsson did with the K800i, they released K810i.

Where's the smartphone with build-in GPS?

Sony Ericsson P1i

I use car quite a lot and sometimes it's hard to find some new places and a GPS device would be great! Although, I'm not driving that much and I feel I don't wanna buy an external GPS device. Instead of external GPS device, I would like to have a phone with GPS so that I could use it every now and then. I think it's about the time to bring smartphone with build-in GPS! Yes, I know. You can use GPS with P1i, but you have to buy an external GPS stick but I don't want that. I want a decent mobile phone with build-in GPS! If I would be driving more, I wouldn't think twice to buy a real GPS device, but in my case phone with GPS would be the best choice.

I really hope that Sony Ericsson thinks twice before they decide to bring new a high-end smartphone without GPS. I think it would be a big mistake to drop out the GPS. Nokia is years ahead when it comes to phones with GPS. I hope Sony Ericsson realized it and starts to bring out phones with GPS.

How about the mobile-TV?

Mobile-TV should be a big thing in the future. I guess Mobile-TV is already a quite big thing in some places, but at least in Finland things are just getting started. So, when we will see the first mobile phone with mobile-tv feature from Sony Ericsson? We have seen solution called Location Free, which redirects TV shows from your home television to target devices such as your P990i, but that's not quite enought. We want a real mobile-tv phone!

Anyways, I read from some site that Sony Ericsson will announce its first mobile-tv device in 2008. I'm quite confident that it's true, because otherwise they will miss a big business.

More market share = More low-end phones?

This seems to be the trend. Sony Ericsson keeps pushing more phones out to get more market share. Of course it's good to get more market share, but this trend has its disadvantages. Few years ago Sony Ericsson always had the best camera phones and they still do have great phones, but think how long after Nokia released the N95 we had to wait to see a Sony Ericsson with 5 megapixel camera? I think it took way too long! I hope Sony Ericsson will do something about it...

Are we going to see something totally new?

What I mean is that, I wonder if Sony Ericsson is planning to release something new that we haven't seen before. Sony Ericsson P5i might be something like that. We have seen some interesting patents, such as Two-way sliding mobile terminal and Sliding touchscreen phone and I hope Sony Ericsson will use these ideas in their products.

...Or maybe it's time for a W900i successor. Sony Ericsson W900i didn't really offer anything new and it was a way too over priced but like the S700i, it was a great phone. I would love to see something like W900i and S700i from Sony Ericsson in 2008, because I have had the S700i and I really loved it. Damn! I shouldn't have sell it...
