Windows Vista x86 solution for Sony Ericsson

Like some of you might know that Sony Ericsson PC-Suite doesn't work with Windows Vista. That's why I'm going to help a little bit by posting this guide, which tells you how you can sync your phone with Outlook. Enjoy!

Thanks to the folks over at the SE-NSE forums I was able to have my K790a recognized by Windows and install the drivers, then with a 3rd party application I was able to sync with Outlook. This application apparently supports Thunderbird and iCal as well, although I have only tried Outlook 2007.

I'm running Windows Vista Business x86.
Using Microsoft Outlook 2007 (must be closed when syncing)
Phone is a Sony Ericsson K790a.

What you'll need:
PC Suite CD that came with your phone
MyPhoneExplorer

Or if you don't have your software CD, borrow your buddy's. Because the CD seems to have more than just specific drivers for your model. I found my CD to contain all the CID49 phones.

The drivers on the CD are actually designed to work on Windows XP. However, due to the similar architecture of Vista's environment, they seem to work just fine as well. Note: PC Suite software will not work, no matter what you try. The drivers are in a separate folder on the CD under Drivers.

1. Install MyPhoneExplorer
2. Plug in your phone
3. Vista will detect your phone, choose install
4. Vista will attempt to look for drivers over Windows Update (I had this setting enabled on my setup)
5. Vista returns with no driver found, asks for a CD.
6. I actually copied the USB drivers from my CD to my Hard Drive, so I just pointed the Wizard to look in that folder. You can actually just leave the CD in the drive and choose Install from CD at this screen.
7. It takes a while to install everything, Vista detected SE's modem, USB, and various other profiles and installed them all.
8. Run MPE as administrator (have to be as administrator)
9. Choose Connect, and the program will detect your phone and you can start syncing away!
