Sony Ericsson might end its partnership with DoCoMo

Recently there has been some discussion about Sony Ericsson's and DoCoMo's partnership. According to Nikkei business daily, Sony Ericsson said on Monday that they will stop mobile phone development and production for DoCoMo, and that it would instead procure handsets from other mobile phone makers and supply them to DoCoMo under the Sony Ericsson brand.

Although, Sony Ericsson spokesman Toshiyuki Kawamura rushed to deny this rumor. He sai that the firm had no plans to terminate product development for DoCoMo phones and that it had no intention to buy phones from other Japanese cellphone makers on an original equipment manufacturing (OEM) basis for shipments to DoCoMo.

Sony Ericsson files another touchscreen patent - PSP phone related?

Sony Ericsson has already filed a few touchscreen patents, such as "programmable touchscreen keypad patent" and "sliding touchscreen phone patent" Now they have filed another patent, called "Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display"

In my opinion this patent might have something to do with the PSP phone and there's actually a mention about the PSP in the patent application:

FIG. 3 is set out to mimic the look and feel of the popular Sony.TM. Playstation Portable (PSP.TM.) gaming device. The area designated by reference number 300 is reserved for game action. It is essentially the display within the display. The dashed box referred to by reference number 305 represents the buttons that appear on the right hand side of the PSP.TM.. The dashed box referred to by reference number 310 represents the buttons that appear on the bottom of the PSP.TM.. Lastly, the dashed box referred to by reference number 315 represents the buttons that appear on the left hand side of the PSP.TM.. The buttons represented by reference numbers 305, 310, and 315 are graphical renditions on the mechanically vibrated touchscreen display 150 of the portable mobile communications device 100. The mechanically vibrated touchscreen display is configurable and re-configurable to suit the mode or application desired by the user. In this example, when the user presses an area of the mechanically vibrated touchscreen display that corresponds to one of the buttons that is associated with the PSP.TM. interface, a tactile sensation is returned to the user that indicates a button was pressed. The exact type of tactile sensation emitted by the mechanically vibrated touchscreen display and experienced by the user can vary according to parameters set out in the display configuration associated with that mode. Thus, some buttons may have different feels than other buttons.

SymbianOne interviewed Mats Barvesten - WVGA UIQ phone is on the road map

SymbianOne posted an interesting interview with Mats Barvesten, EVP Product Planning and Product Management at UIQ Technology. Before moving to UIQ Technology in June 2007, he worked at Sony Ericsson for three years planning the product portfolio, so he has a good knowledge of Sony Ericsson.

The first thing they asked from Mats Barvesten was how surprised he was to see Sony Ericsson smartphone based on Windows Mobile:

I came to UIQ Technology from Sony Ericsson in June last year. At Sony Ericsson I had been involved in planning the product portfolio for three years, so for me it was not a surprise.

XPERIA X1 shows AT&T logo at CeBIT

xperia x1 att

XPERIA X1 made its first appearance at the Mobile World Congress 2008 and of course Sony Ericsson was at CeBIT to show off their new Windows Mobile handset. They didn't reveal anything interesting about the XPERIA X1 but PHONE Magazine posted some new and shiny photos of the Sony Ericsson X1. The panel interface of the XPERIA X1 showed something quite interesting. There was a big AT&T logo, like you can see from the photo above. What could it mean? It probably just means that the XPERIA X1 will come to AT&T or Sony Ericsson is just selling some "ad space" on their new handset.

Anyways, looks like Sony Ericsson still can't demo their Windows Mobile device more because it's running on a new Windows Mobile version.

Sony Ericsson about the XPERIA X1 delay rumor - No comment

Few days ago we found an interesting page from the official Sony Ericsson website, which showed us the release dates of all Sony Ericsson handsets, including the XPERIA X1. The page isn't available anymore, because it's behind a password protection now. Anyways, there has been a lot of discussion about the release date of XPERIA X1. PhoneMag reports at CeBIT that Sony Ericsson refused to comment the rumor. All they said was "it’s still developing." Doesn't sound very promising.

Although, According to the USEB Aldo Liguori, the Corporate Vice President confirmed that Sony Ericsson will be launching the XPERIA X1 in 2nd half of 2008.

This is getting interesting. I just have the feeling that Sony Ericsson isn't telling us everything. Of course they are saying "It will be out in 2nd half of 2008", it's the official information given to the media and they have to stick with it.

Well, all we can do is to wait and see what happens.
